well, papers are done, which is sweet.  and classes are done, which is sweet.  but i have 5 finals, all of which are about 40-50% of my grade ... not so sweet.  but i guess i shouldn't expect to go to graduate school without taking final exams.  we had our final malawi team meeting tonight, and the time is coming up shortly when i'll be off to africa.  i'm starting to get more excited about this now that more obstacles taking up my thoughts are gone (classes and papers).  i also got to go to 2 padres games last weekend.  they first got trounced by the cardinals, whom i have recently decided to despise since they beat my tigers in last year's world series.  the second game the padres beat the reds in a game that lasted only a little more than 2 hours, but that one was a fun one to watch.  perhaps the most interesting thing that happened to me was getting clocked in the nose which resulted in a swollen nose and a black and blue stripe under my eye for a few days.  so even though it didn't really hurt much i got to look like a tough guy for a little while.  or maybe not so tough since i was the one with the black eye ... you can be the judge.  tomorrow is the big annual softball game between the profs + graduating seniors vs. all other students.  last year our all other students team won so we will be looking to defend our title.  one more thing ... i got to preach in class this morning.  i always get plenty of criticism and encouragement, and i really appreciate these opportunities to preach in front of people who will legitimately tell you whether you did ok or not.  one nice thing about preaching in church is that, at least at my church here and at home, the people are usually really kind no matter how cruddy the sermon may have been.  and i certainly appreciate them for that!!  but there is an advantage as well to get criticism and encouragement from those who are learning the same things (students) and especially those who are very experienced and refined preachers (professors).  i'm often reminded on days like this how fortunate i am to be studying at westminster under knowledgable, pastoral profs alongside so many great classmates.  ok, as true as these sentiments are i'm going to jump off of sentimental lane and go to bed.

i have to share that yesterday a small group of folks from church went to the beach for the afternoon and we had the best waves of 2007 so far.  they were super powerful - in fact, as we were walking into the water the lifeguard was announcing that swimmers should not go in past waist high water b/c of the powerful currents.  of course that is rather good news for us boogie boarders b/c it means that the waves are big (probably 4-5 feet, at least some of them) and will shoot us forward at a fairly high rate of speed.  it was incredibly fun!! ... and tiring trying to fight the currents to get out far enough to ride them.  i caught a couple really sweet ones that had me a few feet up in the air only to be shot down onto the water and propelled forward - it was great!  i'm guessing that by now you have caught the jist of my excitement ... needless to say, boogie boarding will be one of the activities i miss most when i have to leave california.  but until then ... "hang ten dude!"  (or something like that - whatever cool surfer dudes are saying these days)

i'm not sure if anyone actually checks this anymore, especially given that i haven't updated since before christmas, but just in case even 1 person checks every now and then, here goes.  this semester, as its reputation goes, is very very busy.  i had 5 papers to write, tons of things to read, a couple weekly assignments, a sermon, and so on.  unfortunately for me, i only wrote 1 paper b/f spring break (6 weeks i think), which left 4 for the last 7 weeks.  i have 3 total done now so i'm on my way to hopefully passing my classes or at least getting all the work done.  this semester has also been characterized by oodles and oodles of card playing when not doing homework, primarily rook and euchre.  my parents came out for spring break and we had good times touring the san diego area, especially its golfing courses.  this summer i'll be teaching in malawi, africa for 6 weeks at a small seminary down there.  i'm pretty pumped about this as i've never been out of the country and i'll get to teach the reformed doctrines to those itching to hear it.  seminary education put to some use - yeehaw!  the month of august i'll be back in michigan interning at beaverdam crc again while my pastor there will be gone most of the month.  so i get to visit home again and make a little bit of money, both of which will be nice.  i suppose that's about all for now unless you want to hear about my schoolwork cuz that's what takes up most of my time.  oh, i'm also in a dinner theater put on by my church's cadets this friday - my character is a tall, good-looking man - i didn't even choose that part, for some reason they thought it fit me. :)  ok, that's really all now ... over and out.

last night was my annual ice skate in southern california night.  last year we went with a group from church to a place in downtown San Diego (outdoor), and this year was even better.  we went to a small outdoor rink right next to the ocean.  in fact, while skating we could see the ocean and lots of palm trees ... really gets you in the wintery Christmas spirit ... or not :)  it was great fun - there's nothing quite like doing winter activities in a place with year round sunshine.  we were at the Hotel Del in Coronado, which is a really fancy hotel in a ritzy town.  the cheapest room is almost $300, the lobby is really fancy, they have a giant ballroom, and their elevator is one of those gate looking things and it had a guy pushing the buttons for us and opening/closing it.  we walked around on the 3rd floor which supposedly has a room haunted by the ghost of someone who killed herself while staying at the hotel.  we didn't see her b/c we couldn't get in the room she haunts, but we did notice the floor was all warped and crooked ... ooooohhhh.  in case you're wondering why this fancy hotel would let 3 (me and 2 roommates) young and obviously not rich guys wander through their hotel unaccompanied, a girl from Zach's and my church works there and was showing us around.  she also got us free ice skating and free parking, which was pretty sweet.  it was a fun night, and a really good way to avoid studying for 2 exams that we have tomorrow.  thankfully, they're the last 2 and then i get to come home for 3 weeks and hopefully play in real snow.  in case i don't update again before then (good probablility), have a great Christmas!!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!!  Mine was a good time.  After church in the morning, we went to the brother of a family from our church.  Without knowing the connections beforehand, Zach (who also went) and I ended up knowing most of the people at his house.  The brother had helped out with the cadet dinner theater that Zach and I took part in last year, and the grandparents of the family also go to our church.  We had about 20 people around the table for dinner and consequently tons of food.  We had deep fried turkey, honey glazed ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, several vegetables, and pumpkin pie.  It was all incredibly delicious!!  And that entire family was so much fun to talk with.  They were energetic, laughing, smiling, etc.  And I got to here the story of how the grandpa started up a lumber yard and drove across the country back in the day when there was only Route 66.  It was a fascinating story!  And, to top it off, I discovered that you can make crystal glasses play music if your finger is wet ... who knew?!?  (I've was told it is done in Miss Congeniality, so I guess if you've seen that you knew, or since I was also told most people know that I guess you probably knew anyway)  Then after dinner we talked outside for awhile and then watched the Broncos/Chiefs game.  I certainly had plenty to be thankful for just on that one day!  I was once again taken aback by the generosity and hospitality of the people at my church (and this time their family too!).  Since the time I first came out here to California, God has richly blessed me with wonderful friends and a church family that takes care of me.  I guess the song is right when it says, God is so good, God is so good, God is so good, He's so good to me.  (I'm also thankful for kids songs).
